Portrait of Joseph Merola

Dr. Joseph S. Merola is a Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry in the College of Science. He earned is Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1978 and then spent 9 years carrying out research in the Corporate Research Laboratories at Exxon Research and Engineering Company. In 1987, he joined the faculty of Virginia Tech and has been here ever since holding multiple positions around the University including Associate Dean of Arts and Science, Acting Dean of the Graduate School, and Chair of the Department of Chemistry. This is his second time as President of Faculty Senate having served in that position in 2013-2014. Joe has received numerous teaching awards and is a member of the Academies of Teaching Excellence, Faculty Service and Faculty Leadership.
