President Sam Easterling called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

April and May, 2004 minutes were approved.

Sam announced that Brian Woerner, 2004-05 secretary of the Faculty Senate had left Virginia Tech to accept a position at West Virginia University. Kerry Redican was elected to replace Brian Woerner as the secretary of the Faculty Senate for 2004-05.

Sam reported the following:

This is the first year that Senate representation will be by department rather than college and that many departments still needed to hold elections. Newly elected Senators will be attending the next meeting;
There is a need for Senate Cabinet members;
The 2004-2005 Faculty Senate meeting dates (September 14; October 12; November 9; December 7; January 18; February 15; March 15, April 12, and May 3). Meetings will be from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in 129 McBryde (through Fall semester, the room may change for the Spring meetings);
The Faculty Senate of Virginia Bylaws were passed;
There is a need for members on the Faculty Review Committee, Ethics Committee, and the Reconciliation Committee as well as other Commissions and Committees. Commission and Committee needs will be discussed again at the September meeting.

Sam introduced President Steger. President Steger shared that Governor Warner is supportive of higher education in Virginia. He also added that the BOV is supportive of faculty issues and they are doing everything they can to be helpful. President Steger also discussed the Charter University concept and how it would be helpful to Virginia Tech.
